What was William Wilberforce’s force?
During recent weeks the BBC have been reporting almost daily that 2007 is the anniversary of slavery having being abolished in Britain and that the ‘main man’ behind the campaign to rid our country of the curse of trading in human misery was William Wilberforce.
Tony Blair has already apologised for Britain’s shameful past in slaving and Wilberforce is being heralded as a hero for his unstinting work in persuading Parliament that there were better ways to bouy up the economy than in buying and selling human beings.
What may seem surprising about all the reporting is that as yet I have not heard of one mention of the well documented fact that Wilberforce’s commitment over a twenty year period to make the slave trade illegal was his Christian faith and devotion to God’s purposes for his life.
It may also surprise those who belive that science has the answers for all our needs that Sir Issac Newton that great intellectual who discovered truths which form a major part of our modern ‘real’ science that he said “I have a fundamental belief in the bible as the word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the bible daily.” On atheism he states, “Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance.”
Friend, don’t be hoodwinked into thinking that science and the Christian faith are incompatible, quite the contrary, the more I learn about the human body for instance, the more I know there has to be a creator and that we are not just an endless series of accidents over millions or as some purport even billions of years. Now that takes real faith, and let’s face it evolution is a state sponsored religion that put’s coincidence and chance as its objects of worship.
Good night.
